I’m on a mission to change the way children feel about exercise.
Why? Because a positive association with exercise in the early years will play a huge role in how active your child is for the rest of his or her life.
Just think about your own relationship with exercise. Chances are you can still remember the way your first teachers made you feel about what your body was capable of doing, and I’m willing to bet that those early experiences have shaped your exercise habits today.
Exercise is a life skill. It’s something your body will need you to do for the rest of your life – and we all want our children to be strong, healthy, confident, happy and generally more successful.
At Fit Kids, we believe that we should be teaching children the life skill of exercise first, by showing them how to enjoy moving and making their bodies work. Part of this life skill involves being mindful of the effect exercise has on the body both daily and over time, and instilling a sense of respect for our own and each other’s abilities.
Moving children onto sport as one possible form of exercise after a good foundation of exercise life skills has been laid, is a winning formula to help create a generation of active adults who enjoy exercise in its own right.
I’m a Phys. Ed. teacher with a background in swimming coaching and a passion for fitness, exercise and healthy living. I’ve worked with a huge range of pre- and primary school children, with a huge range of movement abilities, in the last 20 years, and inspired by my own children, I started Fit Kids in May 2014 as my way of changing the status quo where childhood exercise experiences are concerned. I now spend half my time teaching Fit Kids classes, and the other half training and inspiring the teachers who are attracted to the Fit Kids way to be ‘Fit Kids Superheroes’!
